Street photography portraits #2

street photography candid portraits

Second article about street photography portraits. Here is another series of candid street shots taken by me. Usually I ask for permission, sometimes it’s ok sometimes it isn’t. These photos were taken with different cameras, in different countries. I’ve used wide and 50mm lens. Actually I prefer to use wide angle lens staying close to the subject, it gives more dynamism and energy to this portraits in my opinion. I wrote a short background for each shot in this blog, hope you’ll enjoy it.

Street photography portraits #2

1) The first one was taken in Rome in 2019. I was making street photography in the centre when i saw this mexican girl. Suddenly i’ve taken some shots smiling her. I liked the shape of his sombrero. I bent over my leg to have a different point of view. I wanted to take this photo from below, including the big sombrero. I was really close to her. I’ve underexposed my shots about -2/-3 stops to obtain closed shadows. At the end I’ve captured this surreal portait. I’ve taken about 10-12 shots, this is the best one in my opinion.

2) This second portrait was taken many years ago, probably it was 2014, i don’t remember very well. I took this shot in Ghent, Belgium. This homeless had a wonderfull face to photograph. I asked him if i could take some pictures of his beautiful face. He was happy to hear that and he agreed. I’ve taken different portraits using again a wide-angle lens. This is the best in my opinion. I like the gesture, the cigarette and his left eye that looks blind.

3) The third one is an old portrait of my father smoking pipe at home. Probably I’ve taken this picture with a 50 mm lens at f1,4, about 5-6 years ago. This portrait is a bit atypical; infact pipe and smoke are in focus while the face is out of focus. I like to photograph family and friends, not only strangers. It’s a way to remember and to take photos also in my house (refining also my skills). Try to photograph your everyday (and private) life as Eric Kim and Josh White, it’s funny and beautiful.

4) Another old one. Taken about 5-6 years ago in the streets of Rome. It’s a classic, probably a clichè. I’ve tried a different point of view using selective focus at f1,4 with my 50mm and cropping the image in post-production. I like the result, it’s still a clichè but I like it.

5) The last one is another homeless. He was really kind with me and agreed for some portraits. I’ve tried different point of views and expression, this was a spontaneous one. Again i’ve used 50 mm probably at f1,4 to obtain selective focus and this lovely bokeh. I’ve taken this photo about 4-5 years ago in the streets of Rome. I enjoyed the experience, really nice person.
