Dear Elisa Tomaselli I never met you in person but I’m in love with your street photography…

I’m very sad to hear about the sudden passing of Elisa Tomaselli. She was a wonderful street photographer her shots taken on the streets with flash are full of emotions. Without doubt she was a talent, member of the Spontanea Italian street photography collective; her works won international contests and she takes part also in international juries. As I said at start I’ve never met her so I can’t say anything about the person. But I can say something (and I want do that) about her magnificent street photography. Powerful images taken by Elisa literally catch your eyes: visually strong, you can fell a soul inside them. When I look to Elisa’s shots I can feel a pessimistic mood, I can feel rage and screams…

She post-processed photos in black and white with a lot of grains and a really strong contrast similar to Daido Moriyama’s one in such way. Some shots are blurry, others are perfect in-focus, but in each one you can see the spontaneity of a picture about humanity taken on the street; and this is absolutely wonderful. There is also surrealism in her street photography as black faces in shadow, heads cut out of the frame… I think she definitely reach a particular style in the sense when you see a photo taken by her you can say “yes this is a shot by Elisa Tomaselli”; As I said in another article this is, in my opinion, an important thing in art.

Biography and portfolio

I’ve posted here the official biography about her taken from Spontanea website:

Elisa Tomaselli was born in Frosinone in 1981.

She moved to London for a while after she had graduated in Foreign Languages, then to Rome, where she currently lives and works. Being deeply fascinated by visual languages, especially by photographic medium, in 2009 she enrolled in a few training courses to learn the basic techniques. Afterwards, she left photography for a few years, and got back into it in 2016 through a collective project, which gave her an opportunity to understand the expressive potential of photography better. Since then, her works have been exhibited in Italy and abroad, published in magazines such as “Grain Magazine” and “Eye Magazine”.

Picture posted at the beginning of this blog is probably my favorite one, it is so representative of Elisa’s street photography. I’ve posted below other images but you can find more in better resolution also here. I prefer here bw works but he used also colors sometimes. I really hope his talent will never forget in the future of photography maybe reaching a day the Vivian Maier‘s popularity…
