Art as life expression
Art is a way to express personal feelings and view of life. In my opinion art must express the artist’s soul, his thoughts, his mood. In this article I’ve taken as example photography and painting. The same type of subject, as landscapes, may express different meanings and feelings; the artist has the power to tell his point of view using the camera or the paintbrush.
Gianni Berengo Gardin and Vincent Van Gogh: a comparision
Let’s start with an image taken by the great photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin. Probably he doesn’t think of himself as an artist, but simply as a photographer who documents reality. Instead I find so much poetry in his photos, it’s not pure journalism. Looking to Gianni Berengo’s picture we can find a simple and elegant life metaphor. Life is hard (uphill road with many curves) but also beautiful (wonderful and bucolic landscape); it is better to “face life” with other people ( two persons in the photo) than alone. So in such way it’s both a realistic and poetic point of view about our lifes and I agree with it, in the sense that I’ve the same vision. I don’t feel a pessimistic mood watching this great photograph, my emotions are positive and maybe a bit melancholy. Watching this picture I want to live and enjoy my whole life. This is not a simple landscape, there is something more, a story, a thought, a metaphor, a point of view.
Now watching at Van Gogh’s last painting I feel a pessimistic mood. I’ve already spoken about this work of art in this blog. This is a landscape painted in a pano view. Nature is malignant like in Giacomo Leopardi’s poetry. Life is like a road that leads to nothing, there isn’t a precise end and purpose. Crows are like a terrible omen incumbent over us. Contrast and brushstrokes are strong, colors seem to scream, sky is dark and cloudy. Life is solitude (no human beings painted), full of dangers (wheat fields), there is no hope (the cloudy and dark sky with crows), existence is adverse and hostile. Van Gogh express his idea of life with this pessimistic painting; watching this painting I feel scared, I think more to death than life. This is still a landscape, as the Berengo’s photo, but the mood and the idea behind is totally different. That’s the power of an artist, share his emotions and thoughts about life through his art. In fact Van Gogh was very depressed in his life, he had also a very bad and stormy character, like the sky of his last painting. At the end of his life he had a negative and pessimistic view.
What I try to do with my landscape and street photography is to express myself, my mood, my ideas about life. I hope you’ll try to do the same with your art. There is no art in making a photo of a “famous and viral landscape” without giving something personal to the image. It would be a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy; you’ll show the beauty of the place but not the beauty and intimacy of yourself.
That’s all folks
Stay well, have always light in your life
